Photo of the Week: A Wide-Eyed Peruvian Local

This striking creature is a night monkey (also known as an owl monkey) who lives in the rainforest surrounding the Posada Amazonas ecolodge. Though this guy's picture was snapped during the daytime, night monkeys are the only species of monkeys that is nocturnal. Those huge eyes help it see at night while searching for fruits, leaves, and insects to eat. Night monkey sightings are quite rare – spotting one of them in the wild would be any ecotourist's dream!

  This is a great photo of a night monkey since you captured him or her during the daytime. We are able to see them quite regularly at night in the Bolivian Amazon. They can be found in Madidi National Park and Pilon Lajas Biosphere Reserve & Indigenous Territory via the gateway tropical town of Rurrenabaque.

  Thanks for your comment, Alan. I hear Bolivia is a beautiful country - I hope to make it there one day! This particular monkey was snapped in the Peruvian Amazon. I'm a sucker for all types of monkeys but this one is really quite unique!
