Description

The Tepenahua ejido, located in the Municipality of Nuevo Trecho, Michoacán, Mexico, consists of five localities: Tierras Coloradas, Tepenahua, Villa Eréndira, Los Otates, and El Mirador.

Due to the physical characteristics of the region and the abundance of water, you can see an impressive spectacle of nature: the Tepenahua Waterfalls, an ideal site for adventure or ecotourism activities, or just relaxing with the sounds of flowing water while admiring nature's beauty.

The area has temperate forests and areas with vegetation typical of warm climates that represents the high biological diversity of the area.

Visitors can tour old haciendas that are being conserved, or visit the sugar mills where unrefined brown sugar is traditionally made using sugar, pulque (the sap of the maguey plant used to make tequila), aguamiel (maguey juice, that when fermented, produces the pulque), and alcohol.

Making a Difference

The Tepenahua ejido stands out for the management of its natural resources. The ejido has a development plan that involves community-based territorial management; they are also good mango farmers and excellent hosts.

The ejido shares experiences with other ejidos and indigenous communities; in 2005, this motivated the ejido to form the Community Ecotourism Network of Michoacán (Ecomich), A.C. as a founding partner. This network is made up of ejidos and forest communities from different regions of Michoacán that are developing ecotourism businesses as viable alternatives to generate employment and income while helping to conserve the environment. These activities are planned and carried out responsibly, taking the participation of the ejido and community landowners into consideration, without conducting extractive or any other activities that would place the perpetuity of the natural resources at risk.
