Las Cascadas Lodge promotes sustainability by conserving 740 acres (300 hectares) of primary and secondary forest. Upon arriving at the lodge, visitors note the distinct change between the noise of the city and the tranquility of nature. The preservation of this area is made possible by a carbon offset project, which is financed by tourists who travel with the tour operator Surtrek. This money is used to support the reforestation of the area and to purchase adjoining land to expand the reserve.
Las Cascadas also contributes to development projects within the Cajabamba community, for example, an initiative this year focuses on providing dental care to children of the village.
