The Lacandon forest has high cultural and natural diversity that, combined with its biogeographical location, make this region one of the most important in Mexico. It has even been considered the last refuge for many of Mexico’s plant and animal species.
The Lacandon forest contains innumerable archeological vestiges of the Maya civilization, many of them still unexplored. The places best known and most visited by tourists include Palenque, Bonampak, and Yaxchilán, as well as Tikal and the Petén in nearby Guatemala.
The Lacandon Maya culture is also an icon for the Lacandon forest. The culture has been the object of many studies due to its historic legacy. Time and effort has been invested in describing and disseminating aspects of the culture and its wisdom, highlighting its unusual customs and exotic lifestyle. This is why many visitors come to spend time with this culture and learn from its way of life.
