Description

The “La Raíz del Futuro” (Root of the Future) ecotourism project is located in Ejido Union 20 de Junio, in the municipality of Calakmul. Ejido Union 20 de Junio’s communally-owned land is primarily covered with semi-deciduous tropical forest, the largest trees of which are no taller than 82 feet (25 meters). Between 25% and 50% of the trees drop their leaves during the dry season. Among the forest’s dominant species are mahogany, breadnut, Spanish cedar, bullet tree, tzalan, chacá rojo, yaxnik, guaya, copal, and huano.

Ejido Unión 20 de Junio has set aside an area of approximately four acres (1.5 hectares) for its ecotourism project, which is called La Raiz del Futuro. In this area, visitors can hike on interpretive trails, see unexcavated Maya ruins, and observe king vultures (Sarcorhomphus papal) nesting in their natural habitat. They can camp in the forest, view it from observation towers, and otherwise experience the area’s rich fauna.

"La Raíz del Futuro" is located in Ejido Unión 20 de Junio in the municipality of Calakmul, 27 miles (43 km) from Xpujil. Access is via the Xpujil—Campeche road.
