Guidelines to Participate in SustainableTrip.org

Accommodations must be:

• Located in Latin America or the Caribbean,
• Certified by a third-party sustainable tourism certification program that is duly recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC),
• Verified by the Rainforest Alliance as having at least 50% compliance with our criteria and a signed verification agreement in force, or
• Recommended by a reputable organization.*

*Note: Recommendations are only accepted in countries where Rainforest Alliance verification services are not in operation or for small-scale rural community tourism enterprises. All recommendations are subject to the approval of the Rainforest Alliance and must be backed up by the sustainable performance of the nominated business.

Tour operators must be:

• In-bound tour operators based in Latin America or the Caribbean,
• Certified by a third party sustainable tourism certification program that is duly recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), or
• Verified by the Rainforest Alliance as having at least 50% compliance with our criteria and a signed verification agreement in force.

Other businesses such as restaurants and excursions must be certified by a third-party sustainable tourism certification program duly recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). If there is no certification program available in your country, or if the type of business you manage is not eligible for certification under any existing programs, we will consider accepting a recommendation from a reputable organization.

Examples of acceptable recommendations are:

• Members of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
• NGOs and local or regional organizations dedicated to sustainable resource management, sustainable tourism development, or local socioeconomic development that are working in the area where your business is located.
• Universities / learning institutions that have expertise in the field of sustainable tourism.
• Sustainable tourism programs duly recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) as meeting the criteria for global sustainable tourism.

Note: The recommendation must be backed up by the nominated business’ sustainable performance.

We cannot accept recommendations from:

• Individual persons, even if they are experts in the field.
• Tour operators, travel agents or others that receive benefits, directly or indirectly, from the promotion of a private business.
